“Marry me.”
“What?” I stared back at him, unblinking.
He moved closer, taking my face in his hands. “I love you, Evie. I look into the future, and the only thing I see clearly is you. Marry me.”
What’s an eighteen-year-old girl who was madly in love with her nineteen-year-old boyfriend say?
Of course, I said yes.
Twenty-four hours later, I married Adam Gunner at a Vegas chapel to the sounds of “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi. Not the best omen. I get that now.
Then, exactly one week later, I left him. I walked out, leaving behind my wedding ring, annulment papers, and my heart, and he never knew why.
I haven’t seen him since. Not in ten long years.
Now, he’s here, standing before me. Looking at me with nothing but hurt and hatred in his eyes, he wants answers.
Answers I can’t give.
In When I Was Yours, Samantha Towle tells a story that is captivating, tense, emotional, while being heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. I fell asleep reading this book, and immediately picked it up when I awoke, and didn’t put it down until the book was finished.
The story of Adam and his Evie is a beautiful second chance romance, and while this isn’t a new concept, Towle breathes new life into this storyline by utilizing a dynamic dual POV, and peppering the story with flashes back in time.
Now I know you’ve all read reviews that mention the connection between the characters, how it just “leapt off the page”. Dudes. Let me tell you…THIS…this is how you write an attraction, a connection between two characters. Samantha Towle made me feel like I was the one falling in love, and it was such a delicious feeling. Of course, she can also write one hell of a love scene!
Is there angst? There sure is, but it hurts so good. The emotions are authentic to the story, no drama for the sake of drama here.
This is truly a love story, but it showcases many different kinds of love. Of course, we have the love between Adam and Evie, but we also get insight into the love of family, both the one you’re born into, and the family that you create around yourself.
I had been looking forward to this book for some time, and it did not disappoint. Every aspect of this story was on point, and I recommend it to all lovers of love.
