At nineteen, Kalli Perkins has never been in love and doesn’t ever intend to be. She has her issues handled. She’s managed to keep the secret of what happened to her nine years ago from her mother, although her mother’s usually high anyway and barely notices Kalli or her little brothers.
One night at a party, Kalli makes a bet with her friend, Nate, that could change everything. But she didn’t count on him. Nate’s very capable of satisfying her, not only under her clothes, but in her heart, too.She just doesn’t know it yet.

This was my first book be Rebecca Berto, and it was definitely an interesting introduction to her writing. After getting used to the Australian English, Rebecca took me on a ride I’m not likely to soon forget.
After surviving some horrific things as a child, Kalli is damaged, but tries not to let that get in the way of her life. She maintains her relationships with me in exactly the way she wants them, as odd as her preferences may be. She doesn’t make any apologies for being who she is, and doing what she does. That is, until Nate.
Nate, one of her best friends, is such a great character. He’s not your typical male lead that are in a lot of the books we love. He’s a reserved and respectful guy, maybe a little shy. He’s ADORABLE. For realz. His feelings for Kalli are pretty evident, even when she tries to push him away and convince herself that she’s not good enough for him.
Being Kalli was definitely a different book than I was anticipating, and I’m totally OK with that. I was expecting the story to focus on the romance between Kalli and Nate. Obviously, that is a focus of this story, but there is also so much more. A big part of the story for me was overcoming your personal issues, and this rang true with so many characters, Kalli, her mother, her best friend Scout.
Aside from the romance, this book was about relationships. Kalli’s relationships with her family (including her ADORABLE twin brothers), her friends, her lovers, and most importantly, her relationship with herself.
I really enjoyed reading the book, and I look forward to reading more of Rebecca’s work in the future!
